Hot-water systems and unvented cylinders

Plan hot water around the household.

Hot water needs to work for the way your household gets ready, washes and uses the home. A growing family, changed bathroom use or a different heating system can expose the limits of an existing arrangement.

HeatMason assesses hot-water systems and specifies cylinder installations and replacements across North London. We consider demand, the incoming water supply, available space and the equipment that will heat the water.

Make storage part of the system design

A cylinder should be selected for the wider heating and hot-water arrangement. Its capacity matters, but so do how it is heated, how quickly demand returns and where it can be installed and maintained.

  • Assessment and replacement of existing hot-water cylinders.
  • Unvented-cylinder installations where suitable.
  • Stored hot-water design within a boiler or heat-pump project.
  • Review of controls and the way hot water is scheduled.

Look at demand and supply together

Amir asks how many people use the home, when baths and showers are used and whether several outlets need hot water together. He considers the incoming supply, accessible pipework and existing equipment alongside these patterns. A larger cylinder alone will not answer every hot-water problem.

We also assess installation space, maintenance access and the safety-related requirements of the proposed arrangement. This helps establish whether the preferred location is practical before a cylinder is specified.

Understand the space and capacity trade-off

More storage takes up more room and should be justified by the household's needs. Too little can leave the arrangement poorly matched to peak use. The heating source and recovery of the stored hot water need to be considered as part of that balance.

If a heat pump is planned, the cylinder's suitability must be checked for that system. An existing cylinder should not be assumed compatible simply because it is relatively new.

A useful review before the household changes

This service is particularly relevant when replacing an ageing cylinder, changing heating equipment or finding that hot water no longer meets normal household use. It also helps when a renovation affects the available plant space. We explain whether a focused cylinder project or a wider system change is the more coherent scope.

Agree the arrangement and the work

Amir reviews your enquiry and identifies the assessment needed. Where a paid survey is proposed, the fee and scope are agreed before booking. The written proposal sets out the recommended system and installation scope, including related work and practical access requirements.

Amir specifies the system, attends and oversees installation, and completes commissioning and handover. We explain the agreed hot-water controls and scheduling, with the equipment's ongoing care requirements made clear.

A little more clarity

Questions worth asking.

Will a new cylinder improve my shower pressure?

A cylinder change is not a guarantee of better pressure or flow. The incoming supply, pipework and outlet requirements need assessment to understand the limitation.

Can I keep my cylinder when changing the boiler?

Possibly. Its condition, capacity and compatibility with the proposed heating arrangement need checking before it is retained in the design.

Can the cylinder move to another room?

A different location may be feasible, subject to space, support, pipe routes, maintenance access and the proposed system's safety requirements. Moving it can add work and disruption.

How do you choose the cylinder size?

We consider actual household use and the proposed heating arrangement. Occupant numbers help, but timing, simultaneous demand and recovery also inform the decision.
